WOW! What a year 2018 has turned out to be! We went into Bargaining with at&t on March 6, 2018. Just shy of July 4, 2018, we left the table because of the company’s refusal to bargain in good faith. What a frustration for all of us! Since that time your Bargaining Team, CWA Staff and D4 VP Linda Hinton have continued to meet and strategize. The company has continued their refusal to have any meaningful discussion. Your CWA Bargaining Team is ready and willing to finish what we started back in March.
We are often asked ‘Why aren’t we on strike?’ To put the Members on the picket line is the last step for Union Leadership to take. The Union and the company are miles apart on major issues such as, Jobs of the Future, Employment Security and Healthcare. Just think about it, if CWA President Shelton had called a strike in June, could you honestly say that you and your family would have been able to sustain financially for that length of time? I am sure some Members could withstand being without a paycheck, but probably not many. So why not continue to work and KEEP up on MOBILIZATION.
Stonewalling at the Bargaining Table is nothing more than a bully tactic by at&t. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE BEG. The company is absolutely trying its best to divide and conquer the CWA Membership. I know just how strong and committed the Members of CWA District 4 are. I am betting that we can outlast the company. We, proud Union Members, have built this company from the ground up. Each and every one of us deserves a fair and equitable contract.
As the President of Local 4009 and a Member of the 2018 CWA Bargaining Team, I am asking the Members to commit to continued MOBILIZATION. We can be inventive and creative! We can have fun doing it! But we must not become complacent! We must continue to MOBILIZE!
Tuesday November 6, 2018 is a very important date! ELECTION DAY. We all need to get to the polls and vote! Our lives have been disrupted for months trying to achieve a fair contract. What happens at the ballot boxes will determine the future of the working middle class and Union Families in Michigan and throughout the United States. Year and years ago my Dad told me that a swipe of the pen at the ballot box will change our lives forever. We have surely seen that over the years. It is crucial for us, the working people, to VOTE on November 6, 2018 and end the attack on the middle class. Your vote matters! Please, take time to stand and line to mark your ballot or mail in your absentee ballot. What you can’t do is nothing!
I will end with this quote:
“Civility is on the ballot. Justice is on the ballot. Equality is on the ballot. Democracy is on the ballot.” …. Barack Obama
